Even though it did rain from Friday night until sometime Sunday afternoon, Wally and I were just fine. We were high and dry for the duration. However, the holler is a total wash-out. Wally took me just a little ways down on the 4 wheeler (because we couldn't go any further than that) so I could see how much water there was and I was totally shocked... First of all, it looked like a waterfall rather than a holler so that gives you some idea of the water's volume. Where you used to be able to ride the 4 wheeler and straddle the ruts, it was all water. The waterfall was so wide, you couldn't straddle the ruts because you would have been in about 2-3 feet of water! It's just amazing what water can do. Under normal circumstances you wouldn't hardly be able to dig up a rock because the ground is so hard. That water moved all manner of rock, gravel and wood. So much of the gravel is loose and all over to one side of what used to be the road. So many stones are up out of the water.I'm talking about big, huge stones too, not the ones you can lift. I didn't even know there were stones in there that were that big! We found some really cool ones and Wally's going back down there as soon as he can to get some of the stones for the grill and posts at the outdoor kitchen. We were going to have to go down by Hadley's place to get them but the water provided enough for us right there in the holler. I took pictures but of course I have to wait until Wally takes his phone off the farm for them to download.
Other than the rain we had a really nice weekend. Friday night after work I made my Publix run and I filled up my car with fuel. Once I got home I didn't really feel like doing much of anything so we took a stroll around the yard and checked out the new work on the grill. Well, by the time we got done with that and I got the groceries put up, I was hungry so we went to the diner. It's what, about 10 miles from the cabin? I don't really know so I could be off a little. We had wings which were so-so and we had catfish which was awesome. It came with cole slaw, white beans and hushpuppies. I ordered fries but they never got delivered. I guess they figured I didn't need them (hee hee). They have a new waitress there - she's probably not even as tall as Marcia but she's nowhere in Marcia's league... LOL Talk about slow bringing the beers... jeez, at one point Wally had to get up and go talk to the owner. It was still fun though since I hadn't been there yet after having moved here.
I drove us there and back and Wally was very impressed with my familiarity with Lyles Rd. I still have a long way to go in the learning process but at least I know that road. Of course, I travel it twice everyday M-F so I better be getting good at it. It's hilly and curvy so it's been a challenge. You'll see when you get here!
Saturday we worked around the cabin. I started in on getting the clothes that go in the dresser - into the dresser. It's a little thing but my t-shirts, jeans and socks were in 3 different places and it was driving me crazy. Once that was done I boxed up the stuff I sorted out for Goodwill (don't worry, its' nothing you would want) and dusted the furniture upstairs. I started some laundry and moved downstairs to see what could be done there. The first box I opened was my candles -woo hoo!! Yeah!! Happy Dance of Joy Joy... I can't tell you how excited I was to find that box - finally!! Wally laughs and doesn't see why I get so excited. He says candles are for emergencies...anyway, I got the stuff put away that was on my kitchen table so we can now eat at it. Even Wally has started eating at the table with me. I know, I know, miracles never cease... lol Actually he says he kind of likes it, he was just so used to eating in his chair he never realized it.
I put Rebecca's senior picture in a frame and set her up on one of the end tables. She's in with good company because that's the table where I put the framed saying that Kelly gave me about what a friend is and it's where the cookbooks go that I have yet to read. You know it's an important spot if I keep cookbooks there... ooops I mean you know it's important if I keep Rebecca's picture there... lol
I went through a box that was nothing but trash. Don't ask me why this box made the trip. I didn't pack it so I can't complain but I couldnt' believe I had a whole box of trash. There were old crumpled papers, lots of them, magazines that were torn or had pictures cut out of them (Rebecca's US mags of course), little pieces of pencils, etc. The problem was I had to go through it all to make sure there wasn't anything of value in it. I found two things; a purse and a wallet of Rebecca's - both void of money. Surprise, surprise!
Even though it was raining on and off, Wally worked outside in anticipation of being able to pressure wash on Sunday and I worked inside getting a turkey in the roaster and emptying boxes. I was also finally able to clean the floor in the dining/bar area. Ew, ew ew... it was so dirty!! Two wet swiffer pads later and it was shiny as could be without actually waxing it. Which I'm not quite up for at this point. I dusted the piano, the book shelf and the old victrola and then moved back to the laundry. I don't know how two people can make so much of it...
The turkey was going strong and I could smell it all the way over in the laundry room. This is literally the other end of the house! I made some homemade stuffing with whole wheat bread crumbs, yep- made em myself :) and barley. The usual celery and onions were included along with some carrots that I chopped up real small. I seasoned it with some sage, salt, pepper and poultry seasoning and stuffed it up the bird. I think other than the chopping, the stuffing of the bird is one of my favorite parts.
I have to tell you this and then I have to get some work done. I made a squash casserole to go with the turkey, stuffing and sweet potatoes. It was all cheesey and gooey and bubbly and smelling all good in the house so I took it out of the oven and set it over by the microwave. I made our plates and we gobbled (ha ha no pun intended) it all up. As I brought our dishes to the kitchen, there sat the squash casserole, untouched and no longer bubbly, over by the microwave. Boo!!! We were too full to eat it.
I have to tell you about the new breakfast concoction I made but that'll have to wait until later...
Neccy is having gall bladder surgery today so keep her in mind... She should already be out of surgery but I haven't heard from her yet.
I'll be back to tell you about Sunday and Monday later on today.
